Giant Eagle faces competition — grocery stores invading Pittsburgh

May 23rd, 2006 · No Comments

The Pittsburgh Business Times reported today that Trader Joe’s and Fresh Market are both coming to Pittsburgh.  The speculation is that Trader Joe’s is looking in East Liberty, while Fresh Market is looking in the suburbs north and south of the city.

The biggest grocery store in Pittsburgh (in my unscientific opinion) is Giant Eagle.  Trader Joe’s and Fresh Market will join a number of new Giant Eagle competitors.  Whole Foods Market is already doing well on Centre Avenue.  The downtown area is also getting a “gourmet market” to end a twelve year period where there was no grocery store downtown.  You can find more detail about the “gourmet market” in this Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article last month.
