Local officials need remedial math? Shortfalls threaten development projects.

Anyone have an extra $3.515 billion?

A new report discussed in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette here concludes that the cost of the Mon-Fayette Expressway has jumped $1.4 billion over the past five years and there may not be enough money to complete it.  $3.5 billion is still needed for the project.

This report was released on the heels of a Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article Monday documenting the delay of the Penn Avenue reconstruction in Garfield because Penn DOT chose to allocate the $15 million elsewhere.

Perhaps these officials need a lesson in financial management.  While the officials were optimistic that they would get the funds to complete the Mon-Fayette Expressway, I am sure that Garfield would have a few choice words in response after they heard similar promises for the last six years.
