Makes Good Sense to me: Switch search engines to donate to charity

May 26th, 2006 · No Comments

Search engine news has been in the air this week, with Yahoo announcing a partnership with Ebay (USA Today link; Washington Post link) and Google announcing a partnership with Dell (NYT link).  But what you probably haven’t heard of is GoodSearch.

Following The Burr in the Burgh, I am going to start all of my internet searching at GoodSearch.  It donates revenue from your use of its search engine to the charity of your choice.  Its goal is to donate a minimum of 50% to charity.  If you search twice a day, you will raise about $7 a year for your favorite charity (approximately one penny per search).  While this might not seem like alot, if every user of online searches switched to GoodSearch, $50 million would be donated to charity a month.

The charity I am going to donate to is the National Trust for Historic Preservation.  Its goal is to save our historic places and revitalize our communities.  Every year, it puts out a list of America’s 11 Most Endangered Places.  In 2000, the Fifth - Forbes historic retail area was on the list.

While Google has done some excellent charitable work, and I am sure that Yahoo has as well, I hope that GoodSearch catches on so that we can direct a little money to our favorite Pittsburgh and real estate oriented charities.  You can read more about search engine rewards in an article from the Wall Street Journal earlier this year.
