Pittsburgh has started boarding up abandoned properties, according to WPXI and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. There isn’t enough money in the budget to demolish them, so they’ve bought $6,000 of building supplies. The WPXI article suggests that the reason for the project was a recent abandoned row house fire.
We’ll know soon. With the All Star game a month away, and the effort to board up abandoned properties expected to take a month, it’s a pretty noticeable coincidence. My only question is: will the Mayor keep up the effort after the All Star game or not?
EDIT: I missed the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review article which has details about the cost of the project and a clarification of the 1 month time frame: it’s only for priority buildings — those connected to occupied buildings.
