The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette didn’t even bother asking someone why the population declined. It says that there are too many old people, not enough international immigration, and not enough jobs. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review blames it on suburbanization. Perhaps they should just come out and say that Allegheny County taxes are too high.
But I think that’s only part of the story. The real top 10 reasons people left Pittsburgh last year were:
10. They just couldn’t stand to eat or sleep on a former steel mill site.
9. They were afraid of heights.
8. They got tired of defending to their friends why they lived in Pittsburgh.
7. They heard the national average commute time was going up and they didn’t want to be below average.
6. They were tired of hearing about the casinos.
5. They couldn’t wait for Trader Joe’s.
4. They got to Pittsburgh but couldn’t speak the language.
3. They accidentally crossed a bridge in downtown Pittsburgh and just decided to keep on going.
2. They were addicted to gambling and figured they had better get out early.
1. They were Seattle Seahawks fans who just couldn’t take their loss!
