Loans for Students to Buy Homes

October 10th, 2006 · No Comments

The topic of today’s post over at the Zillow Blog is buying a house for college.  It’s a topic that’s especially relevant in Pittsburgh, where houses are quite affordable.  In fact, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette had an article about it specific to Pittsburgh just last month.

I don’t have much to add on the subject as I have seen a number of resources about the pros and cons of buying student housing, both for your college kid and just as an investment.

With the advertisement during the real estate boom of no doc loans, 40 and 50 year mortgages, zero or low down payments, and interest-only loans, I’m still surprised that I haven’t heard anyone that is targeting loans to students.  Credit cards?  Yes.  Daily.  Everywhere.

You would think that an enterprising company would find a way to provide ownership opportunities to students who are using money from student loans to pay for their housing without requiring a down payment from the folks.
