Tomorrow, one of three potential casino owners will be given an early christmas present when the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board names the winner of the slots license slated for Pittsburgh. Debated (and protested) for the last year, the decision has become more controversial lately because of the decision by Canadian businessman Jim Balsillie to back out of his bid to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins. Speculation on tv and radio has centered around the possibility that either the NHL stepped in to require the team to stay in Pittsburgh or that Balsillie read the tea leaves on the winner of the slots license and backed out of his bid because of it.
With up to a billion dollars in development money around Pittsburgh wrapped up in the decision (including the $300 million for a new stadium for the Penguins), the announcement will undoubtedly have a big impact on the future of Pittsburgh (and, more specifically, the potential areas for the casino: the Hill District, North Shore, and Station Square).
You can catch up on the coverage of the casino decision at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
