North Shore Live: Still On!

January 27th, 2007 · 1 Comment

After the announcement that Majestic Star would be building the Pittsburgh casino on the north shore, I speculated that the Steelers might hold off on plans to develop the entertainment complex known as North Shore Live because of its proximity to the casino.

But based on the commentary in this Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article today discussing the opening of Jerome Bettis’ restaurant on the North Shore and other new North Shore development (including a possible hotel between PNC Park and Heinz Field), it looks like North Shore Live is still in the works, with a limited opening expected in 2008 (the same year that the casino is projected to open).

I’m not sure I’m willing to call the opening of Jerome Bettis Grille 36 “a milestone in the North Shore’s ongoing development” as Art Rooney apparently did, but I am cautiously optimistic that this year will be a big year for developments on the North Shore.

For those interested, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review also covered the announcement from Bettis and the Steelers in an article here, including a photo of an artist’s drawing of the new restaurant.

As a resident of the North Shore, I’m thrilled to see the development known as “North Shore Live” kicking off and I’m pissed about the casino. Just as some momentum was building we take a whack from the Majestic Star. I can hardly wait until all of the poor and downtrodden come pedaling up and down my street looking for a handout so they can go play the slots. What a shame.

On a positive note, I’m not sure if anyone has heard but the Garden is no more. The URA has signed a sales agreement with the owners of the Garden Theater. The Garden will be included in the already sent out Request for Proposals from developers for the surrounding buildings, and the deadlines on the RFP may be extended to accommodate more responses due to the Garden being under acquisition by the URA.
