Pittsburgh’s downtown construction projects

April 1st, 2007 · 1 Comment

Last weekend, I was having a conversation with someone about the number of downtown projects that are in the planning/construction stages and expected to open in 2008-2009. Today, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette goes so far as to say that “[b]y late 2009, you might not recognize the place.”

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has put together a list of $2 billion in downtown construction projects along with the artist’s renditions of the completed project. You can find it here.

As much as I support these projects, it’s now struck me how different the plans for these buildings are from what I love about much of Pittsburgh — it’s historic architecture.

I also wish that the Post-Gazette had published this article on any day other than April 1st. As optimistic as I am about the potential for these projects to transform Pittsburgh, I hope I won’t be looking back on this story as a bad April Fool’s Day joke in a few years.

Having grew up in the Pittsburgh area, this reminds me of a joke.

“what is big and yellow and sleeps four?”

    “a Penn-DOT truck!”

    Ba-dum-bum

The true sign of spring in Pittsburgh was always the orange barrels on the sides of the road. It’s nice to see that little has changes in my favorite small-big city.
