The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette today has an article about the declining population in Pittsburgh. Apparently, Pittsburgh has lost more residents since 2000 than any metropolitan area except New Orleans. This resulted from both a lack of immigration and a declining birth rate.
What the article does not mention is that Pittsburgh is just a little bit less crowded for those of us who remain. Less waiting in line and less traffic jams …. having a small population doesn’t sound all bad to me!

My husband and I were considering moving back to the ‘burgh a little over a year ago. We did a lot of research and we found a few flaws. Yes, the population is declining but to wait in line at Penn-Mac for a few pounds of cheese on Christmas Eve would offer question to such claims. I would be curious of how far of a radius from the center portion of the city was studied. With the rise in taxes for Allegheny County, how many people simply moved to Washington, Beaver, or Westmoreland… and still work in the city.
We actually placed an offer on a home in Mt. Lebo but the RE market in South Carolina softened so we decided to wait. I was excited about the idea of hopping on a bus or the T and having some dinner or going to sporting event with the kids.
Sans the taxes, Pittsburgh is a great place to live and raise a family. Now, there is just a little more elbow room.

Yes you have to wait in line at Penn-Mac. But we have Penn-Mac. How many other cities can boast that? And their prices are right too!
Oh! and check out the new Trader Joes. It’s great.
