Blogging as the next lemonade stand

April 21st, 2007 · 2 Comments

Beautiful weather in Pittsburgh this weekend and people have been out and about!

Today, I attended Bootcamp PGH and had a great time.  I will definitely be attending Podcamp in August.

Two highlights of the event that especially stick in my mind.  The first was a startup ice breaker in a session led by Guru.  30 words were put on the board and the room was divided into groups of 5 or so.  Each group had 10 minutes to pick 2 words, add .com, develop a business idea, marketing, advertising strategy, and branding.  Then we had to pitch the idea to the room.  It was really interesting and great fun.

The second interesting event was a statement by Joel Witt of Folk Media and the Maryland Zoo (one of the presenters at Bootcamp).  He has only been podcasting for a few weeks, but as a veteran of old media, had some interesting insight into blogging and web 2.0.  The idea that blogging is the next lemonade stand really made me think about the way the world was changing.  Instead of selling lemonade for $.25, the local neighborhood kids may be broadcasting a nightly news show or blogging or developing websites instead of selling lemonade.  What a different time!

Thanks for the feedback. I’m glad you enjoyed the opening “entrepreneurial improvisation” session.

I also have some recorded video of the groups presenting. Would it be useful for me to post that online somewhere?

Robert: Great to meet you at BootCamp! I’m glad some of the ideas that crossed your radar resonated with you after the event. Here’s hoping some of the contacts you may have made turn into new and interesting opportunities.

And if you have any questions or comments, don’t hesitate to ask!

(Oh, and Jia: I wonder if posting videos of the pitches might actually lead someone ELSE to actually START some of these companies?…)
