The Pittsburgh Business Times is hosting an online poll to find out which long awaited project Pittsburgh residents believe will be completed first. Choices are:
1. Mon-Fayette Expressway
2. New Arena for Penguins
3. North Shore Connector
4. Don Barden’s North Shore Casino
The results right now are overwhelmingly in favor of one project, but they really should have added these three other [...]

Piatt Place breaks ground
January 19th, 2007 · 1 Comment
The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review covered the official start to construction of Piatt Place by developer Millcraft Industries. 75% of the retail space in the building is already taken and the rest is expected to be leased by the end of this year. The condos aren’t selling nearly as well, though. There are commitments on only 14 of [...]

New Fine to Owners of Vacant Buildings?
January 17th, 2007 · 1 Comment
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that the City of Pittsburgh is considering a new fine (up to $300 a day) for owners of vacant buildings that have not submitted a plan to demolish, board up, or rehabilitate the building.
Isn’t there a better way to create incentives for individuals and corporations to put money into properties?

The vacancy rate for office space in the downtown area of Pittsburgh in 2006 was up 2% to 20%, according to a report issued by Grubb & Ellis and reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Mellon Arena: What’s next?
January 16th, 2007 · 3 Comments
I’m intrigued by an article in the Pittsburgh City Paper (found here) that suggests that Mellon arena, the soon to be abandoned home of the Pittsburgh Penguins, should be saved rather than demolished.
It is quite a thought-provoking article. My hesitation to jump on the bandwagon promoting the preservation of Mellon Arena stems from my opinion that there [...]

Megan from Trulia dropped me an email today with a link to Truila’s new housing heat maps. Here’s the link for the Pittsburgh heat map and the Allegheny County heat map.
As you can see on their heat map, the North Shore, East End (Shadyside/Squirrel Hill/Highland Park) and South Side / Mt Washington are all popular places [...]

Federal-North redevelopment thoughts
January 9th, 2007 · 1 Comment
Last night I attended the Central Northside Neighborhood Council meeting which had on its agenda two important (and current) topics for the North Side: the casino and the Federal-North corridor redevelopment.
It was interesting to hear the concerns of the citizens of the neighborhood and their thoughts on the impact of the casino. There were alot [...]

Getting in on the Ground Floor of the North Side and Homestead
January 5th, 2007 · 1 Comment
You’ve got to know a good thing when you see it. That’s my conclusion after a couple days of thought concerning this week’s editorial in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Negative Pittsburgh.
The editorial takes aim at those around Pittsburgh who are criticizing efforts to build the North Shore Connector, a new Stadium for the Pittsburgh Penguins, and a few other projects around town. [...]
